Frequently Asked Questions

What do you do when you lose your keys?

We can rekey your locks for you. Rekeying means adjusting the tumblers in an existing lock so that only the new key can open it.

No need to purchase new locks each time and for each door.  Simply call and schedule your commercial rekey service today. Rackliffe Lock and Safe will rekey your locks. You’ll feel secure knowing that only you and the people you trust will have access to your business.  We install, replace, and upgrade lock cylinders, locksets, and deadbolt locks.

What are high-security locks?

High-security locks are locks that provide increased resistance to compromise. While many vendors market their locks as high-security, only those that are given an appropriate security rating (or have withstood a long period of analysis by manufacturers, locksmiths, security researchers, and locksport enthusiasts) are considered high-security. Most high-security locks use certain designs or characteristics that improve their ability to resist manipulation and forced entry for a given amount of time.

What is a panic bar?

A panic bar (also known as a crash bar, exit device, panic device, or push bar) is a mechanism for unlatching a door, consisting of a spring-loaded metal bar fixed horizontally to the front of the door (the side of the door that opens outward). It is operated by pushing on it, which unlatches and opens the door.

Can I use the same key for all of my filing cabinets?

Yes. Filing cabinet locks can be installed as KA, or “Keyed Alike.” This means the locks will work with the same key.

My door closer isn’t closing the door all the way. Do I need a new door closer?

Not necessarily. Hydraulic door closers often have an adjustable back-check function. Closing and latching speeds can be adjusted by the regulating valves. If you need help give us a call. We service and install door closers that meet the highest industry standards.

I have a storefront glass door. Can you service it?

Yes. We can install, rekey, repair, and modify any storefront door.

Do you sell commercial-grade door locks?

We can supply, install, and service commercial-grade door locks. These locks are made to take the everyday traffic any commercial location can give it. There is a solution for every budget.

We would like to stop using keys for our employees. Can you do that?

Yes! We have many cost-effective keyless access control locks and systems to fit from one door to 1000 doors. We can custom-tailor a system to fit all your needs, from audit trail (who comes and goes) to controlling access points and times of entry.

What are access control locks?

Access control locks can allow people into your rental property or business without the use of keys. Some types of access control allow people into your facility with the use of a cell phone; in addition, there are many new no-touch readers. These locks can also tell you when someone has entered the building. You have the ability to control when and where anyone can go. Best of all, whether they are allowed to or not, you will be notified by the attempt.

What type of business would benefit from access control?

Any business that has high employee turnover or that would like to allow the use of their building without having to use keys can benefit. Best of all, you can turn off access at a moment’s notice.

What can I do if I’ve locked myself out?

When all options have been exhausted, it may be time to call a local locksmith. Many shops charge a visit fee on top of the actual service fee. Call Rackliffe Lock and Safe for a free quote.

Is my sliding glass door lock secure?

Most sliding glass doors come with a lock that is really just a latch. It shouldn’t be relied on to keep burglars out of your home. We can come evaluate your current lock and make sure it is burglar-proof.

Can I upgrade to a lever on my door lock?

We can retrofit any door lock with a new ADA-compliant lever. These come in any color to match existing locks and can be set to any existing key.

I like the lock I have; I just want a different color. Do you sell ones to match what I have now?

We can match virtually any style and color lockset.

I would like to install one of those fancy handleset locks. Can you do that?

Yes! We can supply and install them on any door and retrofit any existing lock to a handleset. It will improve the look of any door, and they come in virtually any color, shape, or design. We recommend Emtek.

What deadbolts do you recommend?

The top brand deadbolts on the market are Arrow, Emtek, Schlage, US Lock, and Medeco. We install and service all of these brands.

What brand door locks do you install?

We install Arrow, Emtek, Schlage, US Lock, Medeco, Cal-Royal, and Marks USA.

My locks aren’t working correctly. Will I need a new lock?

Not necessarily. We are true locksmiths. We are craftsmen. We evaluate your existing locks to see if they can be repaired first. If they can, we will use the most cost-effective method to fix them.

What do you do when you go to open your safe and you can’t?

Well, the first thing is to not panic. The second thing you need to do is call your trusted locksmith to come help you! But make sure it’s Rackliffe Lock and Safe. Most locksmiths do not do safes as a regular course of business—but we do. We are experts in opening any and all types of safe, from home safes to ultra-high-security safes and vaults. Opening safes correctly requires years of training, the right tools, and substantial investment—but it’s often worth it, since it allows the customer to save money and continue using their safe.

What’s the most important thing to consider when choosing a safe?

First, consider what’s going in it. Don’t overestimate the space inside a safe. Next, determine whether or not you’ll need fire protection. And, finally, find a professional you trust to help you with the installation.

Can I get a safe with an electronic lock instead of a combo dial?

Yes! We can either retrofit your existing lock or order an upgrade when you buy a new safe.

Are electronic locks safe?

Electronic locks have the same security as dials. The difference is that electronic locks are often easier to use.

Do you offer any service contracts?

Yes! We offer a variety of annual service contracts for both residential and commercial safes. Call for details.

I want to change the safe combination on my safe. Do you offer this service?

Yes, we do! We can change both known and unknown combinations. We also offer service for lost combinations on electronic locks without compromising the container!

My handle seems to be very hard to turn lately. What can I do?

Regular maintenance can prevent this from becoming a real problem. Sometimes just lubricating the bolts is all that is needed. Other times extra service is necessary.

Do you deliver and install safes?

We deliver and install any safe we sell. We can arrange to move any safe for you if you relocate locally, as well.

We have an old safe that we don’t use. Do you remove safes, and can you discard them?

We can remove almost any safe from your home or business. We usually try to recycle it, if possible.

I want a high-security safe for my home and business. Do you sell these?

We can acquire any type of safe. Our core sales are for burglar/fire safes. However, we can sell any type of high-security safe, depending on your need.
